Casting the snow blitz as science fiction would be easy. You describe the children tobogganing with amazing expertise acquired in nine months’ continual practice. Their pinched and gray-faced parents announce that, as it is already August and the snow still hasn’t melted, they will have to move. The news bulletins carry dire accounts of the population of New England migrating to Florida.

Not being by disposition a doomsday man, I take no pleasure in reporting that such a picture of the start of a new ice age would be founded in facts. The facts have emerged, in recent years and months, from research into the ice ages of the past. They imply that the threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind.
